Today marks Buddha’s Great Day of Enlightenment, observed on the 15th day of the first summer month in the lunar calendar. On this sacred day, Mongolia’s leading national dairy company, Suu JSC, took part in the "Buddha Festival" held at Chinggis Square by offering its pure white milk and dairy products to the people of Mongolia, contributing to this virtuous act of merit-making.
This sacred day has been observed for over 2,000 years in Buddhist countries across Asia. In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly officially recognized and declared it as an internationally celebrated day. Mongolia, for its part, has designated the 15th day of the first summer month as a national public holiday since 2019.
This day is called “Ikh Duichin Udur” (The Great Day of Enlightenment) because three major events in Buddha’s life — his conception, enlightenment, and passing into Nirvana — are believed to have occurred on the same day. Therefore, it is considered a day of immense spiritual significance when good deeds and virtuous acts bring multiplied blessings. On this day, people strive to keep their minds pure and take part in acts of kindness to accumulate merit.
